How your world is grown

From a sketch

Every brush stroke says what kind of land goes where. Plains rise gently from the coast, hills roll, and a mountain stroke becomes a range that is highest along its middle, with peaks, spurs and passes from fractal noise.

Shaped by rain

Thousands of simulated raindrops run downhill, carrying soil from the slopes and dropping it in the valleys, and steep slopes slump. A young world stays sharp and craggy; an old one is worn smooth.

Rivers and lakes

Water follows the ground: every river flows downhill all the way to the sea or a lake, and grows wider as streams join it. Lakes lie flat, rivers you draw always carry water, and forests, sand, rock and snow follow the height and the slope.

Ideas to try

A child's treasure island, the setting of a story you are writing, a fantasy realm for a role-playing campaign (with a square or hex grid for miniatures, made to sit beside the TerraPrinter Tabletop boards), or a classroom lesson on how rivers and mountains form.
