About the Cologne Cathedral

Building began in 1248 and stopped in the early 16th century, leaving the choir and a stump of the south tower for about three hundred years; it was completed to the medieval design in 1880. At 157 m its twin west towers make it the tallest twin-spired church in the world, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

What the model includes

Laid out from OpenStreetMap’s outline and 3D parts of the cathedral. It shows the five-aisled nave and three-aisled transept with a steep gable over every aisle bay, the 45 m clerestory walls under the 61 m roof, the double flying buttresses on their pinnacled piers, and the choir’s apse, ambulatory and chapels. The transept fronts have their portals, great windows and 70 m gables, the crossing tower carries its star at 109 m, and the west towers rise through three square stages and an open octagon with eight gables to ribbed, crocketed spires and their finials at 157 m.

It is built from simple closed solids, so it slices cleanly and stands flat. In the download window you can set the height from 10 to 250 mm and add a base plate with the name in raised letters. The mesh has about 58,952 triangles, small enough to open in any slicer.

Print the Cologne Cathedral on its real terrain

Map data stores most buildings as a flat outline with a height, so the Cologne Cathedral would normally print as a plain block. In TerraPrinter, this model takes its place automatically. It is turned to match the outline in the map data and stands on the real elevation, with the streets, water and buildings around it.

Questions

Is the Cologne Cathedral 3D model free?

Yes. You can download the Cologne Cathedral as an STL or 3MF for free, without an account, and print it as many times as you like.

What size should I print the Cologne Cathedral?

At the default height of 120 mm it measures 111 × 66 × 120 mm. Pick any height from 10 to 250 mm before downloading. Thin parts like spires and antennas print better at 100 mm and up on a 0.4 mm nozzle.

Do I need supports?

No. The model stands flat on its base and prints upright without supports.

Can I print the Cologne Cathedral with the city around it?

Yes. "Print on its terrain" opens TerraPrinter with the area around the Cologne Cathedral selected. When you generate the model, this landmark replaces the plain block from the map data and stands on the real terrain with the surrounding streets and buildings.
